WE Inspire Networking TableOn March 30th, Main Street Web Development attended the first annual Women Entrepreneurs Inspire Conference in Oklahoma City.  With a goal of 400 attendees, the Oklahoma State University Riata Center for Entrepreneurship outdid themselves with an attendance of over 650 women entrepreneurs!  Talk about exciting!!  I’m here to tell you that the future of America was sitting all in one room that Tuesday.  I’ve been to lots of conferences in my various fields of study, and I’ve never been to a more motivating venue.

In The News

Main Street Web Development was featured in the first edition of The Altus Aviator today.  Here’s what The Aviator had to say:

McKelvey offers affordable websites

“The DigiFix Web Design Studio, the answer for Altus businesses seeking affordable internet presence, has just made personal web design even more inexpensive.

“Heather McKelvey, founder and executive director, says the web sites are easy to use and easy to find.  She is announcing her latest endeavor, Main Street Web Development, where websites can be created for less than $30 a month.

Cheap websites are a dime a dozen.  There are plenty of places on the web you can go to get a website for just a few bucks a month.  Problem is, they’re kind of ugly.  And if, indeed, you do happen across one that really looks great, you have to do it yourself!  Now for do-it-yourself kind of folks, this is a good proposition.  But for those of you who don’t want any website DIY in your life, you’re kind of up a creek if you don’t want to make the initial investment a custom website requires.

At The DigiFix Web Design Studio, we have realized this conundrum for quite some time, and we’ve been working on a solution that acts like a “crossover” website.  With our new line of websites at Main Street Web Development, we are taking the affordable price of a DIY website, the fabulous creativity of a custom website, and DOING IT FOR YOU, to bridge that gap between what you want and what you can afford.

My Sunday Cup

This afternoon I am drinking from my Sunday cup.  It’s one I haven’t used since before I lived in this house, which means I probably haven’t used it since becoming a mother.  I drank from this cup every Sunday afternoon BC (before children).  Drinking from my Sunday cup was a privilege I only allowed myself on a Sunday afternoon when my entire house was clean and sparkling, something of which I regrettably cannot currently boast.  The delicate, ornate, blue and white teacup and saucer were a gift to me from the tea room the day of my bridal shower.  Somehow that teacup spoke to me of a life which I had yet to live.  It seemed to represent a person, a season, an experience that I had yet to embark upon.  Now looking back, I see that my teacup was indeed symbolic--symbolic of my journey into adulthood where fantasy and reality intermingle too delicately to tell them apart.

Monogram Dishcloths

imageOne of my coworkers at Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital got me hooked on hand-knit dishcloths.  I used the ones she knit until they literally fell apart.  My mom has recently begun knitting cute little dishcloths with all sorts of patterns, and when she sent me a handful of them, I was instantly charmed.  And inspired.  They have the whole vintage thing going on but with absolute modern style and usefulness.

Over Christmas vacation, I borrowed some of my mom’s patterns to knit some dishcloths for myself, but being the eternal (and Southern) customizer that I am, I was aching for a dishrag with my own fancy monogram on it.  After a thorough online search, I found nothing but plain ole patterns for block letters.  Bleh!  So I searched through my font library and decided to “roll my own” pattern.  And here it is, for any of my knitting friends who happen to share the need for an M dishcloth.  smile

The Relevance of Christmas

I’ve a grown a bit weary of the frivolities of Christmas.  Cheap strings of lights on houses, larger-than-life candy canes lining driveways, Santa posing for kids’ photos in the mall, junk mail with pictures of shiny red bows on tools offering “More Christmas”...the list goes on and on.  All of these things that modern marketing techniques now leverage to benefit our sacred economy threaten to distract us from the real reason we celebrate Christmas.  I know, I know, we hear it every year.  Jesus is the Reason for the Season.  So if that’s the case, than why isn’t He the Focus of the Season?  Why do we pour so much energy into decorating our houses and buying gifts yet almost overlook worshiping Him?

Student of the Month

Today was a proud day for me.  My son received the Student of the Month award for his class.  Just as every parent is beside themselves when their children win awards, I was “poppin’ my buttons”, as my mom would say, considering all that he has been through and still he stands straight and tall and full of confidence.

imageI already regret not taking a photo today.  It’s what all good coupon ladies do when they save a bundle.  I always feel slightly embarrassed for them when I see their whole load of groceries laying out there for everyone to see.  It sort of makes me feel like a nosy grocery clerk.  You know, the one that comments on everything on the conveyor belt?  My blood’s already boiling just thinking of it.  So with that in mind, I chose not to photograph my big load today.  But now that I’ve tallied up the earnings, I really wish I had a picture to prove it.  It’s like a rite of passage for a brand-new couponer to have a photo to show the goods.  You’ll just have to take my word for what I bought.

Swarovski Flip Flops

Today I blinged my heart out.  Inspired by some VERY expensive flip flops, I decided to make my own.  I know, big surprise there.  Several days ago I searched online high and low to find out how, what, and where.  I ordered my fave brand of flip-flops--Nike--and a small assortment of Swarovski rhinestones.  Today’s rain kept the kids and their umbrellas and bikes busy enough to afford me some time to bling.  But as always...Altus hit me square in the face, right as I sat down with my supplies.

image I’ve missed a lot of blog posts lately due to the enormous amount of work I’ve poured into my latest project.  By now I should have blogged about two birthdays--Will’s 6th Birthday Bowling Party and Hunter’s 4th Birthday Tutu Party.  I should have posted pictures of my spring sewing projects--a placemat art pocket, a baby doll dress, lots of tutus, and curtains for my office.  And I should have blogged about my extremely smart kindergartener who reads at second grade reading level, his first tee ball season starting, my daughter who has grown nearly an inch on growth hormones, my grandmother, aunt and uncle who were spared in a potentially horrible car wreck, and the trees my husband planted in the back yard.  But instead, I’ve spent every waking minute building a cool new website for Altus.

We’re having some not-so-fun times in the McKelvey household these days.  Don’t hear me wrong--we’re having fun times too, and we’re trying to not let those fun times be shrouded by the muck we’re wading through.  But despite our positive attitudes and reliance on God’s strength, there is still a sadness in our hearts we’re having to face.  At times I feel a little guilty about actually grieving about seemingly minor things, but no matter how small it seems in comparison to another’s trials, THESE trials are ours, and they’re not going away.

The First 14 Random Things

This meme has been going around Facebook, and I’ve been tagged a couple dozen times.  I don’t usually do these things (isn’t that what you’re supposed to say before you do one?), but I nearly split my sides last night laughing at two of my friends who did, so I decided I want a piece of the action.  The point is to write 25 random things about yourself, and then to tag your friends on Facebook so they’ll do the same and tag you back.  It’s to “learn more about each other.” But I say, no way.  It’s to get a good laugh.

South Beach Day 2

South Beach is a good name for a diet.  It’s a constant reminder of swimsuit weather.  That name, however, does not make me any less hungry for something sweet and soft to sink my teeth into.  I didn’t realize how often I just pick up something random to eat.  And now...all those random things are off the list.  And I know I have some spritz cookies left in my Christmas tree jar… And yes, I still have Christmas stuff out.  (The tree is put away though.)

Power Hour

If I had already made my official list, I would have already spoiled my resolutions.  Instead, I’ve found a better way to accomplish the greater goal of having a cleaner house.  First of all, it’s always a bad idea to determine to do any one thing every day.  You’re setting yourself up for failure, and I realize that.  Honestly, I don’t even like to aim for a certain number of times per week.  Then I’m constantly having to scold myself for falling down on the job.  The idea with making resolutions is to improve your efforts in life in some way, so that each year you are better than the year before.  I often aim for doing something every day so that I feel more committed to the task.  It seldom works.

South Beach WHAT?

My list of New Year’s Resolutions, er, um, goals, does not include dieting.  I plan to blog about that list at some point in time, once I fully have my mind made up about them.  I figure, hey!  Wait to see which ones you can keep, and call ‘em then!  But anyway, the “d” word.  Bill came home yesterday talking about his friend who is on the South Beach Diet.  I could tell he was pretty determined to do it, and I realized that meant I, likewise, would be doing it with him.  I am, after all, the one who prepares his meals.  I can’t fix healthy stuff for him and eat the same old junk myself.

Christmas Day 2008Our emphasis at Christmas time is not on gifts.  Most of our “Christmasy” discussion all month long is centered around the manger and the fact that we celebrate the birth of Christ, and not the coming of Santa and his reindeer.  We partake in plenty of seemingly secular Christmas traditions, like decorating the house, making ornaments, baking goodies, and giving gifts, but we use those traditions to signify the important event that we are celebrating, just as we have traditions that celebrate our own birthdays.  I suspect that most of my readers feel exactly the same way about Christmas.  The point of it all is to celebrate the birth of Christ.  But we still have lots to do and talk about that seems a bit less spiritual.  I don’t want to downplay the importance of Christ on this Christmas evening.  However, I think that most of us have had our time of reflection and praise for this Christmas season, and we will continue to do that at least weekly, if not daily, throughout the year.  So at the risk of sounding sac-religious, I’m going to use my Christmas blog post to give an annual gift report rather than prolong the manger scene sentiments.

Our 2008 Tree

I’ve always admired people who have a Christmas tree in every room.  I personally find it far too difficult and time-consuming to put up more than one tree, although I have been known to put up maybe one big tree and a couple of small ones.  After all, we don’t usually finish our tree until the day or two before Christmas.  We start early enough--don’t be mistaken.  The day after Thanksgiving, I’m usually banging my head on the attic rafters while the rest of the world risks being trampled to death in public places.  Bill drags out the Christmas decor (less and less each year, at my request), and we get the pre-lit tree put up and re-lit.  But we don’t always put the ornaments on it just yet.

Foolproof?

It’s inevitable.  When I get in the kitchen, there is going to be trouble.  And that’s a problem, because I practically live in the kitchen.  If I’m not in the bathroom (tending to kids, of course), I’m probably in the kitchen.  As long as we’re moseying along doing everyday sorts of things, though, we’re all pretty safe.  But mix in some baking products and a little holiday cheer and you’ve got yourself a recipe for disaster.

Unexpected Tears

I had planned to get to work as soon as putting the kids to bed tonight.  Instead, I am sitting here in a pool of tears at the thought of my first-born son going off to kindergarten Wednesday.  We met his teacher today, and she seems really nice and well-organized.  I had a pretty good feeling about his school, and I think he is really excited about it.  I’ve so loved having him at home this summer since preschool let out, and I’ve sort of dreaded this moment in time.  I thought I was handling everything like a big girl, until I popped in his preschool classroom today to say hi on my way to Hunter’s 3-year-old preschool orientation.  Just the sight of his little preschool room turned me into a fountain of tears I didn’t know I had.

I don’t have much good to say about living in a small town.  Especially after spending two weeks of July in three different metropolitan cities in the Southeast.  And I always try to hold to the adage that if you don’t have anything good to say, you shouldn’t say anything at all.  And that, my friends, is one of the reasons I haven’t blogged in over a month.  But despite my discontentment with things like a brand-new Starbucks planning to close its doors, nowhere to buy a swimsuit for small children, and driving over two hours just to see a medical specialist, there is still one thing I love about a small town--the people.
